“Favorite Foodies” is a Q&A-style series in which I feature people I admire from the food world.
For the first installment of this new series, I’m super excited to introduce Sarah Coates, the gal behind one of my favorite food blogs, The Sugar Hit. Sarah’s writing is witty and to-the-point, her photography stunning, and her recipes unique yet totally approachable - it’s no surprise her site has a loyal, international following, and that she’s been in publications like, Food and Wine and Food 52, to name a few. Keep reading to learn more about the force behind the amazing Australian blog.
Vivid childhood food memory:
One of my favourite childhood food memories is eating 2-minute noodles (I think that’s ramen noodles to ya’ll in the USA) with my sister as a very young kid. I remember we were so specific about how we made the noodles - how much water to add, how long to cook them for (yes, we did ignore the ’2-minute’ in the name), and when to add the little flavouring sachet. Totally low-rent and totally silly, but that’s what I remember the most!
Favorite music to cook to:
Oh man, I have a ridiculously eclectic taste in music. I usually start with a little motown, move onto something heavier like early Rolling Stones, then through to Led Zeppelin, and I’ll probably end up with the Arctic Monkeys’ latest album, and then maybe some Paul Simon? Like I said, eclectic.
Favorite food moment in a movie:
This is so hard to narrow down to one! I’m totally food-obsessed, so the food scenes in pretty much every movie always stay with me. One that I particularly love is the start of Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Audrey Hepburn, her tiara, the Tiffany’s shopfront, a coffee and a danish. It’s such an enchanting scene. And it always makes me want to eat a danish and be in New York.
Also, the food fight scene in Hook. AMAZING. I ordered rainbow-flavoured ice cream for about a year after I saw that movie for the first time.
Fantasy dinner party guests (dead or alive):
Nigella Lawson, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Bill Murray, Steve McQueen, Nora Ephron, David Letterman and Paul Newman.
My ideal last supper would be:
Steak. Perfectly medium rare rib fillet steak with crispy, well seasoned fries, bearnaise sauce and watercress salad. For dessert, chocolate mousse. This is such a weird thing to think about. I never would have thought my answer would be so traditional, but there you go.
The best thing I cooked lately:
I made some slow cooked pulled pork just the other day, with homemade little brioche rolls and a very tangy barbecue sauce. That was pretty awesome. But I think it has to go to this pear tarte tatin - it was insanely delicious.
An ingredient I’m intimidated by is: Shellfish! Like prawns, lobster, scallops, mussels, etc.
Because: When I was little, I was diagnosed with a mild allergy to shellfish, and like a lot of little kids I was happy to stay away from the weird-looking seafood. Now that I’m older, I’m trying to get more of it back into my diet, and I don’t seem to be reacting badly to it. But I’m super intimidated by cooking it, because it’s all so new to me!
What I love most about blogging:
The absolute best thing about blogging, for me, is the people. The food blogging community is a group of the most hilarious, creative, inclusive and fun people out there. And they are all as obsessed with eating as I am. Heaven! And that’s not just other bloggers either. I get so many great tips and inspiration just from readers commenting about how they’ve tweaked a recipe. It’s a joy.
