I’m a big kid now.

I remember the first time we ever talked about it. It was when I was visiting Rene up at school in Pennsylvania, back in 2012. We had only been dating for a few months but somehow brought up the idea of moving in together. At first we laughed at it, but within minutes both realized it was actually a great idea and we should really do it. Fast forward to now and alas, our wish is coming true. We have signed our first lease together.

This is such a huge step that I don’t even know how to begin talking about it. On the one hand, I’m jumping-out-of-my-shoes excited to finally move out of my family’s home and in with Rene, and to be a real bill-paying adult. But on the other, I’m nervous. Everything is happening so fast (even though I’ve been waiting for this moment for over two years) that I find myself having many fears and anxieties (some rational, some not so much). Like, what if Rene and I realize we don’t really like each other as much as we think we do? What if we lose our jobs? What if a burglar breaks into our apartment, decapitates us and eats the cat? All excellent questions!

I am trying to contain the crazy, calm the f**k down and enjoy this time for what is it. I’m super excited to pick out new sheets, break in my new [tiny] kitchen, have friends over for cocktail parties, and do all the other fun stuff associated with this phase of life.

Something that will definitely be easy to get used to is a shorter commute to work. Since I am moving from South Brooklyn to Queens (right across the river from Manhattan), my travel time will be cut to a third of what it is now - a very welcome change.

What was it like for you to move out of your parents’ home for the first time?
