Cocktail Hour: Boozy Strawberry Milkshake

“Cocktail Hour” is a monthly series in which I try my hand at making simple yet impressive cocktails at home.

This recipe - well, non-recipe rather - was born out of my desire to create a grown-up strawberry slushy drink. Because no matter what your age, there is nothing better than the refreshing power of a frozen fruity drink on a hot summer day. I tested several versions of this recipe, and they were good, but the simplest turned out to be the best - frozen strawberries, ice cream and booze.

Although the market is currently overflowing with gorgeous local strawberries, I decided to use the frozen kind instead, since they help keep the drink chilled for longer and eliminate the need for ice. Also, frozen strawberries are frozen at the peak of their freshness so they taste just as good. You may use raspberries instead, if you’re more into those. And the booze? You have freedom there, too. Vodka, tequila or rum would all be great. The ice cream, however, is non-negotiable. Häagen-Dazs is the best. Period.

This milkshake would be a perfect dessert at a barbecue, or any other summertime outdoor gathering. It’s also a great consolation for when you realize everyone took off for the Hamptons this weekend except for you (not a personal anecdote).
