Orient Express Cocktail Bar

Between the vintage wooden bar, red leather stools, tiny tables (perfect for holding hands and gazing into another’s eyes) and practically nonexistent lighting, just two words are needed to describe this bar: date spot. Seriously, as soon as you step foot into this place, you are transported to a time when ladies wore gloves, gentlemen wore hats, and seemingly everyone had something witty to say – basically a ‘60s Audrey Hepburn movie. Located in the heart of the West Village, Orient Express is the place to go to get a masterfully crafted cocktail – especially if you’re trying to get frisky with a special someone.

The NYC Food Bloggers and I had the chance to sample some of their fare and cocktails last week. I started with “La Gare,” a bourbon, orgeat and rosemary-infused vermouth concoction that is perfect for enjoying during the colder months. The drink introduces itself as sweet and herby, and finishes with bitterness and heat via the bourbon. The bartender also mixed up a few cocktails for us to try that aren’t on the menu (pictured below). If my memory serves me right, the left is tequila-based and flavored with strawberries and mint, while the right is gin-based and mixed with a red bell pepper puree. The latter is reminiscent of a Bloody Mary, sans heartburn, so if Bloody Mary’s are your thing, I’m sure the bartender would be happy to make it for you. As for the food, everything on the menu is light and perfect for sharing. I recommend the hummus served with warm pita bread, as well as the cheese and charcuterie plates.
